Female sitting volleyballers qualify for Rio 2016

TEHRAN, Nov. 08 (MNA) – Iranian women’s sitting volleyball team, who had reached the finals at the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games, has qualified for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games for the very first time.

Vice President of the Iran’s Volleyball Federation for Persons with Disabilities Leila Tavakoli said the quotas were gained a year ago in Incheon and the team will head to Rio 2016 Paralympic Games by the support of National Paralympic Committee as well as the Federation.

“The first stage of the athlete’s training camps was recently held in the city of Isfahan which was the first step in a series of training camps to prepare for the Rio as well as the Intercontinental Cup to be held in March hosted by China,” added Tavakoli.

The official pointed out that the first stage of the camp was attended by 20 designated players from Incheon competitions as well as some under-25 athletes who had recently attended a sport camp in Tehran.

“The presence of Farid Saebi as the technical manager of women’s team marks a good asset due to having precious experience in various world arenas and Paralympics which helps Iranian athletes improve techniques, tactics and overall fitness,” she asserted.

“Ahead of the Paralympic Games in Rio, the Intercontinental Cup will be held in China in March with participation of two representatives from each continent,” said Tavakoli adding, “Iran and China will represent Asia in the tournament.”

The official deemed the upcoming competitions as a great opportunity to face and evaluate the best teams of every continent as well as getting prepared for the Paralympics; “also during the tournament, new classification of athletes will be approved as well as that attending the tournament will be effective in promoting sitting volleyball team’s global ranking,” she concluded.
